All Oya devotees have a black “fly-whisk” made of a horsetail as a symbol on their altar, called Iruke or Irukere in Yoruba-language. This is a Yoruba status symbol for people of noble descent, it functions like a scepter for the king and speaks of Oya’s royal background. Here the iruke’s hair is drawn in a circle with a spiral movement, as Oya moves around in her dances imitating a tornado and storms, what reflects her tempestuous energy she is sharing with her beloved husband Shango.
