Orisha Shango was once living as Alaafin and ruling over the Oyo Kingdom, which was famous for its cavalry. In Cuban Orisha dance he is still mimicking a horserider in his movements. Also equestrian statues are common as shrine figures in Yoruba artwork. Here the horserider is depicted with all the typical Shango paraphernalia, and a small Eshu figure guiding the horse. Colored in deep blue like indigo dye, an old Yoruba technique.
